Diwali, which is also called Deepawali or Dipawali, is a Hindu festivalDiwali means rows of lighted lamps. It is a festival of lights. It is the greatest festival of Hindus. But all Indian celebrate it joyfully. In this festival, people light up their houses and shops. During this festival, people worship Ganesha, the elephant-headed representation of God and Lakshmi, goddess of light, wisdom and fortune.
The Diwali or the Festival of Lights (also called Diwali or Sanskrit, Deepavali or Deepawali ) is the grand festival of India: the entrance of the new Hindu year . It is held around mid-October and mid-November, depending on the lunar calendar. It is a religious festival celebrating various religions in India , such as Hinduism , the Buddhism , the Sikhism and Jainism .
Diwali is also celebrated in Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Mauritius, Malaysia and Guyana. In the atmosphere of Diwali is common to see people buying brand new clothes for these days, sharing sweets with family and friends and there is a profusion of firecrackers and fireworks.
The Queen of the Festival is Lakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu, goddess symbolizing good luck, beauty and the bestower of prosperity and wealth. Also, the popular god Ganesha is especially revered in these. In the eastern part of the country, particularly venerate the goddess Kali. Meanwhile, the Sikhs celebrate the release of their sixth Guru, Hargonbind , and pay tribute to the ten spiritual gurus of Sikhism. To the Jains , on the day of Diwali died saint Mahavira (549 -. 477 BC), founder of Jainism, so that the majority of people in India have a religious reason to celebrate besides the endearing and contagious good atmosphere which can be enjoyed by any street India.

How is it celebrated?
The houses are cleaned and specially decorated with various motifs and oil lamps or candles that are lit at sunset. It is usual to hold a composite of savory dishes and sweet food, giving gifts to people nearby and family, fireworks and games.
It’s time to renew the books of accounts, general cleaning, replace some household items and paint and I decorate for the coming year. It is tradition that the goddess favor special way to reconcile with his enemies. We recommend installing an altar in a prominent place in the homes where an image of Lakshmi is present which will offer flowers, incense and coins.
In the evening they open all the windows and doors of houses and in each of them an offering of light is made with an oil lamp or candle, repeating the same mantra to Lakshmi among the rest of the year.
paper boats lit by lamps or holy rivers were also released. It is said that the farther you go, the greater the happiness in the new year and some called Manora designs, which are some drawings on the walls that are decorated for the festival are made.
A sunrise is ritual washing head, which has the same merit as bathing in the holy river  Ganga (Ganges). The symbolism of the festival is the human need to move towards the light of truth from ignorance and unhappiness.

This festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Kartik which falls sometime during the October or November months. It is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Ram from 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon Ravan. In many parts of India Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days and is one of the most popular festivals in India.

How to do Diwali Puja describes step by step instructions to perform a simple Diwali puja process at home.

Laxmi was the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean of milk when the gods were sent into exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the Churning of the Ocean.
